Ingredients

Why metric?

Metric avoids regional spoon ambiguity. US uses 5 mL tsp, 15 mL tbsp and 240 mL cup. Small masses stay in grams unless a verified recipe conversion exists. More on measurements

  • 110 g rolled oats
  • 350 ml reduced-fat milk (361 g)
  • 150 ml water (150 g)
  • 1 banana, sliced (120 g)
  • 30 g almonds, roughly chopped
  • 15 g honey
  • 0.5 g iodised table salt

Method

  1. Put the oats, milk, water and salt in a saucepan over medium-low heat.
  2. Cook 10-12 minutes, stirring often and scraping the base, until the oats have swollen and the porridge falls thickly from the spoon rather than running off it.
  3. Take it off the heat and stir half the banana through so it softens into the porridge.
  4. Spoon into two bowls, top with the rest of the banana and the almonds, and thread the honey over.

Serve

A moderate bowl. If large meals are one of your patterns, this is the size to keep rather than the one to double.

Cool and cover within two hours of cooking; split large amounts into shallow containers so they chill quickly. Reheat until steaming hot, at least 60°C.
